Upgrades (Hotrod)

CD Players (Clock, Caps, IC's, PSU, etc…)
Amps (Caps, Resistors, Microphony, Wiring, Toroidal transformer)
Speakers (Caps, Wiring, Resonance, Acoustic treatment with Spectra Dynamic products.)

CD Player Upgrades

Power supply

  • Linked to clock = 0% Stress on the machine's PSU (Power Supply Unit) [ View image... ]
  • R2400.00
  •

High speed diodes

  • Soft recovery = cleaner PSU
  • Price may vary slightly depending on the quantity of diodes used - eg. DAC & DRIVE.
  • R650.00

DAC chips upgrade

  • Bring your CD player or DAC up to specs = Huge sonic leap!
  • Price may vary depending on quantity, normally most units use two.
  • R850.00

Polypropylene capacitors upgrade

  • Used in all critical areas.
  • Quote subject to quantity.

Toroidal transformer

  • Replaces the block transformer = Less EMI and transformer noise
  • R4790.00

Specifications

  • Clock Fully RF shielded and resin encapsulated circuit for stability and noise reduction. Internal coil on power supply input cuts all high frequencies entering the circuit thus preventing RF noise from exiting the circuit.
  • Oscon capacitor is used for excellent high frequency capability as required by the high speed CMOS IC.
  • Electrolytic and ceramic capacitors are used at appropriate points in the regulation circuit.
  • High speed CMOS processing IC is used for wave shaping the original crystal signal to produce a smooth clean waveform.
  • Dimensions: 53 x 37 x 20

This smooth clean waveform is the reference for all signal processing and will therefore reduce jitter and improve signal conversion.

Power Supply

  • Internal power supply regulation circuit for voltage stability and noise reduction.
  • PCB mounted resin-encapsulated transformer ensures stability and prevents resonance.
  • 4 ultra high-speed glass bead diodes for fast recharging of reservoir capacitors.
  • Oscon capacitors for excellent high frequency capability as required by clock.
  • Polypropylene bypass capacitor to subdue HF noise and improve transients.
  • Inline PCB mounted 20mm 500mA fuse with clear plastic cover.
  • Dimensions, excluding mounting studs: 101 x 33 x 30 mm.

Sonic Results

  • A more pristine top end
  • Tighter bass
  • Cleaner blacker background
  • More air and openness
  • Greatly improved focus
  • Huge reduction in grain
  • Smoother sound
  • More resolution and inner detail
  • Greatly improved imaging

Important

The clock upgrade should be performed while replacing the lesser quality diodes in the power supply for the high speed soft recovery diodes. These upgrades can be performed on any entry level and high end brands.

Room Treatment

Why is room treatment important? Frequently audiophiles become so absorbed in equipment upgrades that they forget that the listening room is the final link in the reproduction chain. We provide expert consultation on room treatments, equipment setup, and turn-key solutions through scientific measurement of your room's actual characteristics.

To tweak or not to tweak

Why do I believe tweaking equipment is relevant? Well, because when a manufacturer produces a product, they have a certain budget and they manufacture within those constrains. Most of them overlook very relevant aspects such as parts used, microphony, rigidity, etc...

In my experience, I've always believed that the problem starts at the source. I'm also one who believes that earthing is where it all begins.

After you've sorted that out, you can start tweaking:

  • Your room
  • Your front-end
  • Your preamp
  • Your power amp
  • Your cables
  • Your speakers

The aim in tweaking is to:

  • Unclog the sound
  • Achieve focus
  • Improve transparency
  • Improve transients and snap
  • Improve the sense of air and soundstage

Basically, through tweaking, you are optimizing the potential of your system, and letting more of the music through.
